Managers should be leaders first
A huge company with more than 7000 employees, in 2008 and during the global financial crisis, it canceled and in one day 30% of its deals, and of course, it was a disaster.
The company did not absorb a large number of its employees and their high salaries, and they were forced to save 10 million dollars in expenses.
The Board of Directors met and decided to lay off part of the employees, but (Bob Chapman - CEO of the company) rejected the idea, and kept discussing them for a long time, until they reached a satisfactory program that would solve the crisis.. which is:
that every employee, from the simplest worker to the chairman of the board of directors; To take a leave of 4 weeks without pay, at any time he wants, and it is not a condition that the weeks be consecutive.
The genius was not in the idea of the solution, rather the genius was in the way the president of the company announced the program. He told the employees:
" It's better that we should all suffer a little, than any of us should have to suffer a lot ."
Meaning:
((It is better that we all suffer a little than some of us suffer a lot))
When employees sensed safety and appreciation from their company and found them to be of value, they began implementing what was required and increasing it.
Whoever among them had enough money took 5 or 6 weeks of vacation, and whoever was less able took two weeks, and so on.
It was a surprise!! The company saved $20 million, double the number they needed, and not a single person was dismissed from the company.
☆ There is a big difference between...
👎 Manager, who sees only numbers.
👍 And the Leader, who knows the value of a human being.
